The Program

Spell to Excel is the result of years of development and study into the way children learn to read, write, and spell. Spell to Excel provides each individual student with a suitable spelling list for instruction and practice. Spell to Excel uses technology for pre-testing (pre-assessment), practicing (Five Step Word Study, practice tests, etc.), testing (post test), and holding students accountable (Words I Know) for using words and concepts in their daily writing.

Program Steps

Spell to Excel is the only product on the market that tests a student’s prior knowledge at the beginning of each learning unit. The Pre-Test generates an individualized list based on pre-test results and student input. The next step is to study each word using our unique Five Step Word Study. Word patterns are highlighted drawing attention to word study. Each of the five steps guides the student’s thinking in how to learn a word, with immediate feedback along the way. At the teacher or parent’s recommendation, students then choose practice from homework packages, word sorts, games, writing, or a practice test, all on line. At the end of the study period, students test on line. If a student needs more practice time or re-teaching time, the test can easily be reset allowing the student to study and practice until he/she gains proficiency. The last step is to practice and proofread the Words I Know, (a list of high frequency words organized by grade level). Proofreading provides the opportunity to revisit the most frequently used words over and over again. Over time, spelling fluency is obtained.
